Born in Sri Lanka (former Ceylon), Shantan had left the Indian Ocean Island following the eruption of its communal civil war in 1983 and had been living in Germany ever since.

Involved in the graphic and printing industry by profession, for him, photography is a thinking-art that could depict social reality.

He is currently pursuing an Advanced Diploma in Professional Photography.
